Students' Exchange

Students' mobility is the core of educational integration between partner universities. For Yamagata University the exchange of students with its partner universities have contributed highly to the creation of a DD Program with Leibniz University Hannover. It has also contributed to the research activities of  Graduate students to the partner universities as partnership structure offers students a broad range of choices to improve their research and university life experience. Following this model, new programs are expected to be created with other partner universities. Below is the chronological order of activities, carried out by our laboratory since 2013 until now.

  • 6-19 January 2013

    Winter School  in  Japan 

    11 students from Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany) came for a 2 week winter school to Yamagata University to learn more about this heavy snowfall region.

  • 13-22 Sep 2013

    Autumn school in Mongolia

    This was the first group student exhange overseas. 8 students from YU,  visited Ulaanbaatar and Terelj together with 10 Mongolian students. We visited Mongolian University of Life Sciences and various research sites.

    Spring School in Germany

    8 students from YU went for two week to LUH and various  research institutes with 11 German students in Hannover, Braunschweig, Erfurt, Halle, Weimar and Berlin.

    Atumn School in Japan

    10 chinese students from NEFU visited YU together with 5 students from LUH and 10 students from YU. During their stay, several lectures were given at research institutes in Tsuruoka, Yamagata and Shinjo (this activity was funded by Sakura Science).

    Summer School in Mongolia

    Understanding Environmental and Socio-Economic changes in Mongolia in the last decades
    The 2-week international student program is a coordinated effort of Mongolian University of Life Sciences (MULS), Yamagata University (YU) and Leibniz Universitat Hannover (LUH). Students from the Northeast Forestry University in China and Lleida University in Spain also participated.

    Autumn school in Japan

    Agriculture and Forest Management in cold and heavy snowfall environments, northeastern Japan
    10 students from Mongolian University of Life Sciences (funded by Sakura Science) visited together with students of Yamagata specialists from universities,
    research institutes on multiple fields ranging from
    forestry, agriculture, effective use of resources and
    application of technology in cold environments.

    Summer School in Mongolia

    8 students from YU and 10 students from MULS, visited strategic facilities for the functioning of cities (Power Plant, water treatment plant, Food Products Inspection Center), Research Institutes and cooperation Agencies from Japan, Korea and Germany operating in Mongolia

    Winter School in Japan

    11 students from LUH, 11 students from NEFU and 5 students from MULS came to Yamagata University and together with 10 students from YU, visited research institutes and strategic facilities of the city of Tsuruoka, visited the coastal forests affected by the Tsunami in Miyagi Prefecture and the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences and research institutes in Iwate Prefecture.

    Summer school in Japan

    5 students from Hue University (Vietnam) visited YU together with 5 students from MULS (Mongolia) and 10 students from YU. During their stay, several lectures were given at research institutes in Tsuruoka and Niigata (this activity was funded by Sakura Science).

    Winter School in Japan

    Students from LUH (16) came to Yamagata University and together with 10 students from YU, held a seminar in the University Research Forest, visited research institutes and strategic facilities of the city of Shonai visited the coastal forests and other affected  areas by the Tsunami in Miyagi and Fukushima Prefecture.

  • 11 -25 September 2018

    Summer school in Germany  and Spain

    12 students from YU visited Lleida University in Spain (11.-16. Sep) where they were introduced to the university and did daytrips to different research sites. They continued their travel to Leibniz University Hannover in Germany (17.-25. Sep) where they, together with students of LUH, visited Research Centers, National Parks and companys located all over nothern Germany.

    Winter School  in  Japan 

    Students from LUH, 17, together with 5 students from VNUA (Vietnam National University of Agriculture) and 5 students from CU (Chiang Mai University) visited Yamagata University and together with 10 students from YU, participated in a joint seminar at the Yamagata University Research Forest, visited research institutes and strategic facilities in Tsuruoka, Yamagata and Sendai. We visited coastal forests in Miyagi that were affected by the 2011 Mega-Tsunami and how it has recovered.

    Summer school in Italy and Germany

    During this summer school, 12 students from YU visited the University of Torino (UoT) for one week and then LUH for two weeks. In both countries, we had the opportunity to visit research institutions, university facilities, private companies and cultural sites.

    Autumn School in Japan

    Students from VNUA, 5, and 5 students from CU visited Yamagata University and together with 10 students from YU, participated in a joint seminar at the Yamagata University Research Forest, coastal forests in Shonai, Ishinomaki, Iwanuma and Zao Mountains in Yamagata and Miyagi. This activity was promoted by the program Sakura Science (JST).

    Winter School in Japan

    A total of 10 students from three universities in Peru visited Yamagata University with 16 students from LUH. During their stay, several lectures were given at research institutes, biomass power plants, Zao Mountains, Coastal forests and the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences. The highlight of this seminar was the visit to the Tsunami museum in Rikuzentakata.  Peruvian students were sponsored by the Program Sakura Science (JST).

    Online Autumn School

    The 2-week international student program was conducted online because of the onset of COVID, limiting international travel. YU provided funds to conduct a field seminar for foreign students using videos on demand and discussing them in daily online seminars with students from Vietnam, Peru and Thailand. Despite, the limitations with the video preparations, the seminar had good reviews from the participating students 

  • 19-28 February 2021

    Online Winter School


    Based on the experience we had with the online autumn seminar, another 2-week international student program was conducted with students from Germany, Italy, Spain and Peru. We showed natural ecosystems in Yamagata, Niigata, Toyama, Miyagi, Iwate, Aomori, Hakodate and Akita. The high biodiversity of forests ecosystems in this long transect was shown in the seminar, even though it was done in winter.

    Online Summer School

    Still in COVID period. This time we invited two universities from Peru: Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM) and Universidad de Tecnologia (UTEC). The summer school was sponsored by the Sakura Science Program. The topic was the distribution of forest ecosystems in Northeastern, Kanto and

    Summer School in Germany

    After three years, it was finally possible to continue with the exchange program between LUH and YU. Thus, 5 students from YU visited research institutes and strategic facilities in Hannover, Hamburg , Kiel and Bremenhaven. During this summer school, we extensively explained the characteristics of the DD Program between our universities. 


  • 18-06 February/March 2023

    Winter School in Japan

    As with the summer school, we also waited for 3 years to  conduct this activity in Japan. We welcomed 18 students from LUH, 5 students from Chernihiv Polytechnic National University (Ukraine) and University of Torino (Italy). During their stay, we visited several of our research sites in Yamagata, Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate and Akita Prefecture. All these prefectures are in northeastern Japan. Around 13 students from YU also participated, making it one of the most international exchange activities we have had so far.
